2020年12月，交通运输部印发《全面做好农村公路“路长制”工作的通知》，明确到2022年，覆盖县、乡、村道的“路长制”全面建立。推动各县（市、区、旗）设立农村公路总路长，并分级设置县级路长、乡级路长、村级路长。县、乡、村三级路长在总路长的领导下，分别对所辖农村公路的建设、管理、养护、运营及路域环境整治等负直接责任，协调解决突出问题，督促相关部门落实管理职责，完成总路长交办的工作任务。
交通运输部近日公布的数据显示，我国已建立了覆盖县、乡、村道的“路长制”组织体系，初步形成了“政府主导、部门协同、上下联动、运作高效”的工作格局，农村公路治理能力显著提高，发展更加规范有序。截至2021年底，农村公路的总里程达到446.6万，十年来净增了90多万公里。
