Business of Green: An appeal to slow down onbiofuel.

Last Friday an advisory panel to the EuropeanEnvironment Agency issued an

extraordinaryscientific opinion: The European Union should suspend its goal o

f having 10 percent oftransportation fuel made from biofuel by 2020.

The European Union's biofuel targets were increased and extended from 5.75

percent by 2010to 10 percent by 2020 just last year. Still, Europe's wellmeaning

rush to biofuels, the scientistsconcluded, had produced a slew of ha

rmful ripple effects - from deforestation in SoutheastAsia to higher prices for

grains.
