Meet China’s Obama lookalike who makes $1000 per show

For former security guard Xiao Jiguo, a Chinese Barack Obama-lookalike who commands as much as $1,000 per performance, the future is looking uncertain as the US president prepares to leave office.

随着美国总统奥巴马即将离任，中国“山寨奥巴马”肖基国的未来面临不确定性——现在他模仿奥巴马的表演出场费每次约1000美元（约合6900元人民币），而此前他的工作是保安。

Xiao now worries whether he will still get calls to shows where he copied Obama, speaking in “fake English”, after the American leader completes his term in January.

肖现在担心的是，在这位美国领导人1月份结束任期后，他是否还能接到邀请演出的电话，让他说着“蹩脚英语”模仿奥巴马。

The former Sichuan resident is 30, 168 cm tall and has a face that, well, does resemble the outgoing US President with just a happy stretch of the imagination. It doesn’t really help that Xiao’s English stumbles before barely beginning.

肖是四川人，今年30岁，身高168公分，脸确实长得有点像即离任的奥巴马——如果加上一点愉快的想象。他说得磕磕巴巴的英语倒是不能加什么分。

But add the short-cropped, greying hair and a practiced repertoire of gestures – there you have your Obama, even if in Chinese.

Back in 2008, when Xiao was a security guard in the southern province of Guangdong, a colleague said he looked like Obama.

2008年，当肖还在中国南方广东省当保安时，有同事说他长得像奥巴马。

Xiao’s career as an impersonator gradually took off as Obama stepped into his second term in 2012.

随着奥巴马在2012年步入第二个任期，肖的模仿事业开始慢慢有起色。

Then in 2014, a television act got him a burst of applause and the first brush with recognition.

In the meantime, Xiao watched Obama videos to pick up his array of gestures.

“I generally watched his videos on the internet. See, I don’t speak English so I made up some ‘fake English’ which sounds like real English to those who don’t understand,” Xiao told Hindustan Times at his spotlessly clean one-room home in a bustling Beijing neighborhood.

肖在家里接受《印度斯坦时报》采访时说：“我一般是在网上看他的视频。你看，我不会说英语，所以我就造了一些‘冒牌英语’，让那些不懂英语的人听了，觉得像真的英语。” 他在繁华的北京郊区的一居室房子干净整洁。

Last year, Xiao began getting offers to perform at shows, sometimes for as much as $1000 and often for more. “I have made around 1 million Yuan from the dozens and dozens of shows (across China),” he said.

去年，肖开始获得一些演出邀请，有时出场费有1000美元甚至更多。他说：“我（在全国各地）做了许多场演出，总共赚了大概100万元人民币。”

What does Xiao think of Obama, a democratically elected leader?

“He is humorous and I’ve heard that he is well-mannered,” Xiao said, adding he doesn’t follow the US president’s politics.

Is his life as a mimic going to change when Obama leaves the White House?

奥巴马离开白宫后，他作为模仿者的生活会发生变化吗？

“I think my prospect will change. I might focus on being an actor or a singer. I don’t deny that I will keep impersonating Obama, we resemble each other, he’s got a lot of fans all over China and in the world.”

“我觉得我的前途会发生变化。我可能会专心当一名演员或者歌手。我不否认我会继续模仿奥巴马，我们俩长得很像。他在中国和全世界有很多粉丝。”

“Every President has a successor. Not only Obama, (Donald) Trump will also leave the White House four or eight years later. Every leader of a democratic country will have to have a successor.”

“每个总统都有继任者。不单单是奥巴马，特朗普在四年或者八年后也会离开白宫。在一个民主的国家，领导人都得有一位继任者。”

Xiao is now taking acting lessons at the Beijing Film Academy.

目前肖在北京电影学院学表演课程。

“I don’t think there’s a big market in this field (mimicry). It won’t be enough only to copy others, so I’ve been trying to expand my field. From taking performance lessons to shooting films, and now I’m studying, trying to be a real actor. I’ve also had my own song shot and released.”

“我不认为这个领域（模仿他人）有很大市场。光会模仿别人是不够的，所以我正在努力充实自己。上表演课、学习拍电影，进行深造，我想成为一名真正的演员。我还发了自己的单曲。”

In that song, I Am Oba, the Chinese Obama is shown having a good time with the Chinese version of Kim Jong-un, the North Korean dictator. Evidently without a care about their future.
