From Mr Darcy and Elizabeth Bennett to George Knightley and Emma Woodhouse, she is behind some of literature’s most enduring romances. And it seems Jane Austen’s obsession with fictitious marriages began at an early age. Newly unearthed documents reveal the author falsified a document to announce her impending marriage to two separate men while a teenager in Hampshire in the late 18th century.

Miss Austen created the fake entries in the Steventon marriage register, which she had access to because her father, George Austen, was rector of the parish. The little-known document, held by Hampshire Archives, includes a fictitious entry for the publication of banns of marriage between Henry Fitzwilliam of London and Jane Austen of Steventon.

Another fake entry details the marriage of Edmund Mortimer of Liverpool and Jane Austen of Steventon. It is not known whether either of the two men Fitzwilliam or Mortimer actually existed. The remarkable document reveals much about the workings of Miss Austen’s mind, who never married and died alone, but made marriage a central subject of many of her novels.

Her most famous work, Pride and Prejudice, opens with the line: ‘It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.’ The novel, published in 1813, ends with the central characters Elizabeth Bennett and Fitzwilliam Darcy getting married, but only after Elizabeth is certain she is marrying for love.

The centrality of marriage to Austen’s books was not just about romantic fulfilment, but also made a statement about the material circumstances of 18th century women - for whom marriage was often a necessary means of financial security. The handwritten false marriage records revealing Miss Austen’s ‘mischievous side’ will go on public display at an exhibition in Hampshire in May.

Hampshire County Council’s culture spokesman Andrew Gibson said: ‘In the year when we celebrate 200 years since her death, this unique document uncovers another side to Jane Austen’s character. ‘Jane would have been in her teens when she wrote these fake marriage entries, and some could say it reveals a mischievous side during her younger years.’“”

The documents will go on display as part of the Mysterious Miss Austen exhibition at Winchester’s Discovery Centre, which marks 200 years since the author’s death at the age of 41. Austen spent much of her short life in Hampshire, where her old home is now a museum. The county was a source of inspiration for her novels, and her heroines are often depicted taking long walks through the Hampshire mud.
